About the Faculty

The Faculty of Sharia is the oldest faculty at Al-Ahgaff University. It was established in 1995/1996 and is located in the city of Tarim, in the Hadramout Valley—a city that has long held a distinguished position as a center of Islamic scholarship and religious learning and has been renowned for producing numerous scholars and educators.

The Faculty offers a unique educational model that combines traditional methods of Islamic education, renowned for producing highly accomplished scholars, with modern university education systems.

Teaching at the Faculty is delivered by a distinguished group of renowned scholars recognized for both their knowledge and practice, many of whom have mastered the reading and understanding of classical Islamic texts, alongside specialized academics and professors from Yemen and abroad.

The Faculty seeks to develop scholars deeply grounded in Sharia sciences and legal studies, while also possessing an understanding of the requirements of the modern era. Since its establishment, it has sought to welcome students from across the Islamic world.

The Faculty is distinguished by the strength of its curriculum, which meets the requirements of specialized study in Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), Usul al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence), and Law. It also seeks to develop well-rounded scholars with knowledge of the Qur’anic sciences and Hadith terminology, alongside the study of Islamic economics, banking, and computer science.

The Faculty’s educational approach emphasizes cultivating moderation among students and distancing them from sectarian fanaticism. It opposes religious extremism and encourages academic research, particularly into emerging contemporary issues, while emphasizing respect for scholars, honoring them, and acknowledging their contributions.

The Faculty has two main departments:

  1. Department of Sharia
  2. Department of Sharia and Law

To date, the Faculty has graduated twenty cohorts specializing in Sharia and eight cohorts specializing in Sharia and Law.
