The Faculty of Graduate Studies at Al-Ahgaff University in Mukalla has awarded researcher Saleh Hussein Mohammed Hawash a Master’s degree in Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) and Usul al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence) for his thesis entitled:
“The Concept of Numbers in the Verses of Legal Rulings: A Foundational, Applied, and Comparative Study.”
The study consisted of two main chapters. The first chapter explored the concept, significance, rank, and evidential authority of numbers in legal contexts, providing proofs, verifying attributions, and identifying the most preponderant opinions.
The second chapter focused on an inductive analysis of the Qur’anic verses of legal rulings that include numerical expressions, examining both the explicit and implicit meanings, scholarly opinions, supporting evidences, and analytical discussions of each view.
The thesis concluded by clarifying the jurisprudential implications of numbers according to scholars of Usul al-Fiqh, emphasizing their evidentiary role in legal rulings. It also applied these findings through a detailed study of relevant Qur’anic verses in light of established legal principles.
In his recommendations, the researcher called for further studies that bridge the gap between the theoretical principles of Usul al-Fiqh and their practical applications by exegetes and jurists across various schools of thought, aiming to address the limited use of foundational principles in interpretive reasoning.
