The Faculty of Graduate Studies at Al-Ahgaff University in Mukalla has awarded a Master’s degree in Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh to researcher Saleh Hussein Mohammed Hawash for his thesis entitled:

“The Concept of Number in the Verses of Legal Rulings: A Comparative Theoretical and Applied Study.”

The thesis consists of two chapters. The first chapter examines the concept of number, its implications and classification, its evidentiary authority, and the proofs supporting its application, while also discussing the differing scholarly views and identifying the preponderant opinion.

The second chapter is devoted to an analytical survey of the verses of legal rulings in which numbers occur. It examines the explicit meanings and implied concepts of these verses, presents the views of scholars, discusses the evidence supporting each opinion, and provides a critical analysis of those arguments.

The study concluded by clarifying the significance of numerical expressions according to scholars of Islamic legal theory and their evidentiary value in deriving legal rulings. It also surveyed Qur'anic verses containing numerical expressions and examined their application in accordance with the principles of Usul al-Fiqh.

In the conclusion of his thesis, the researcher recommended conducting further studies that connect the principles of Islamic legal theory with their practical applications in the works of Qur'anic exegetes and jurists from various schools of thought. This, he noted, would help bridge the gap resulting from the limited application of these principles by exegetes in their methods of legal reasoning.

The thesis examination committee consisted of:

• Dr. Mohammed Hamed Mohammed Bahmeesh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh at Al-Wasatiyah University, Member and External Examiner.
• Dr. Asfiya Al-Rahman Faisal, Assistant Professor in the Department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh at Al-Ahgaff University, Chair and Internal Examiner.
• Dr. Abdullah Saeed Al-Sumahi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Islamic Studies at Al-Ahgaff University, Thesis Supervisor.

The examination committee commended the efforts made by the researcher in preparing the thesis, which was successfully defended, and subsequently awarded him the Master’s degree, wishing him continued success in his academic and professional journey.

The defense was attended by Professor Sadiq Omar Maknoon, Vice President of Al-Ahgaff University, along with a number of faculty members and the researcher’s friends.
